Keynote Speakers

Invited speakers and presenters taking part in the Joint European Magnetic Symposia 2020, held as a fully virtual conference from 7 to 11 December 2020. The programme brought together leading experts in magnetism research, spanning the plenary and semi-plenary sessions, the specialised symposia tracks and the special technical session.

All session times are given in CET (Central European Time).

About the invited contributions

Invited and plenary talks

Keynote and semi-plenary speakers were invited by the programme committees to deliver talks on current research directions in magnetism, spintronics and related magnetic-materials technologies.

Contributed presentations

Selected contributions from the specialised symposia were presented either as oral presentations or as poster sessions with flash presentations, following the rules set out for each session format.

Author information

Presenting authors must be registered and in attendance at the conference. Only registered participants in attendance were able to deliver their scheduled oral and poster contributions during the virtual edition.

The Joint European Magnetic Symposia brought together researchers working across the full breadth of magnetism, from fundamental spin physics to applied magnetic materials and devices. The virtual format used for the December meeting allowed participants to join from many countries without the burden of long journeys, keeping the scientific exchange broad and inclusive. Session times were shared in a common European time zone so that scheduled talks and posters could be followed reliably from any location.

The scientific programme was organised into plenary and semi-plenary sessions, specialised symposia tracks and a dedicated technical session, giving invited and contributed work room to breathe. Presentations were delivered live online, and informal discussion forums were provided alongside the formal talks so that questions and exchange between presenters and audiences could continue outside the scheduled slots. Posters and shared documents complemented the spoken contributions.

Preparation for the online format required careful attention to how the meeting was delivered. Instead of the planned on-site venue arrangements in Lisbon, the organisers reorganised the event around digital platforms, extended deadlines for submissions and abstracts, and adapted the communication channels used to reach participants. Procedures concerning abstracts, proceedings and the publication of contributions were adjusted accordingly, reflecting the shared responsibility of organisers and contributors during unusual circumstances.

A strong supportive network shaped the success of the meeting. The organisers worked to keep registration and participation affordable, with reduced fees and grants available, and aimed to provide infrastructure that made the switch to a virtual congress as smooth as possible. Feedback and open forums helped refine the format, and the closing message expressed gratitude to the speakers, committees and sponsors who sustained the community through a demanding year.

  • Oral presentations: 12-minute live talk followed by 3 minutes of questions.
  • Invited oral presentations: 25-minute live talk followed by 5 minutes of questions.
  • Poster presentations required an A0 portrait PDF file and a 2-minute pre-recorded flash video.
