Support for participants

Grants and awards were part of the JEMS 2020 programme, offering financial support to attendees and recognition for scientific contributions across the symposia tracks.

Registration fee levels applied to the same categories covered by the support scheme. Standard registration was €250 with Early Bird rate (until 5 November) or €350 at the Regular fee (until 2 December). Students and retired participants paid €100 (Early Bird) or €200 (Regular).

As a fully virtual edition of the Joint European Magnetic Symposia, JEMS 2020 was planned for December 7-11, 2020 in Lisbon, Portugal, with the organisers adapting the format in response to the pandemic and related public health regulations. Because the venue, travel, and in-person gathering arrangements had to be reorganised at short notice, the organisers took care to negotiate common bookings and provide the necessary infrastructure for an online programme, aiming to keep the financial burden on participants as low as possible while preserving the scientific content of the meeting.

The virtual format shaped how the scientific community could interact. Rather than the usual corridors, poster halls, and mingling areas, the online platform offered forums and direct exchanges that allowed presenters and participants to discuss results in convenient, extended ways, including talks, posters, and dedicated discussion sessions. These opportunities for interaction became central to the programme design, ensuring that the shift from an onsite congress to a remote one did not diminish the value of the scientific discussion that the symposia are known for across Europe.

Grants and awards formed part of the JEMS 2020 programme, providing financial support to attendees and recognition for scientific contributions. This support mattered particularly in a year when travel was restricted and many delegates faced the prospect of joining from their own laboratories or institutions. By offsetting registration and participation costs, the grant scheme helped make the virtual meeting accessible to a broad international audience, and the awards highlighted the quality of the work presented by speakers, poster contributors, and the younger members of the magnetism community.

Responsibility for the congress extended across the scientific and organisational committees. Scientific inquiries were handled by INESC MN Microsystems and Nanotechnologies, while the event itself was organised by Abreu Events, Lisbon Office, with a dedicated local team supporting the virtual experience. The programme featured invited speakers, a structured schedule of sessions, abstracts and proceedings, and a set of committees and speakers spanning the European magnetism community, reflecting the collaborative, association-based character of the Joint European Magnetic Symposia and the European Magnetism Association.
