The organization of JEMS 2020 reflects the collaborative spirit of the Joint European Magnetic Symposia, the biennial meeting of the European Magnetism Association held in Lisbon, Portugal in December 2020. Because of the pandemic, the event was planned as a virtual conference, and the organizational bodies worked to preserve the format's convenience and opportunities for interaction among participants, presenters, and speakers. The committees described on this page outline how the scientific and organisational backbone of the meeting was assembled.

The scientific backbone of the symposium rests on the program committee and the network of symposia organisers, which brought together topics spanning magnetism in condensed matter, spintronics, nanomagnetism, and applied magnetic materials. A dedicated publication committee oversees the abstract book and proceedings, ensuring that contributions presented orally or as posters are documented for the wider scientific community and remain accessible after the event.

Grant and award schemes supported the participation of younger researchers and enabled attendance by delegates for whom travel budgets would otherwise have been prohibitive. By moving the meeting online, the organisers were able to extend access beyond the original on-site capacity of the venue, offering a broader international audience for the talks and posters. Advisory committees contributed guidance on programming, format, and communication throughout the extended preparation period.

The logistical side of the meeting was coordinated with the local conference bureau and event partners, with attention given to health, safety, and pandemic regulations. The goal of the organisational effort was simple: to guarantee a smooth running programme with talks, posters, and discussion forums in a convenient format, while minimising the financial burden on participants and creating the conditions for direct, engaging scientific exchange across the magnetic research community.

International Advisory Committee

The International Advisory Committee (IAC) of the European Magnetism Association supported the scientific scope of the symposia.

Support Team

Support was provided by INESC MN, IFIMUP, INL and CICECO, together with the Abreu Events congress office in Lisbon.
